Theoretical issues with staggered fermion simulations

چکیده
The legality of the " rooting trick " in dynamical staggered fermion simulations is discussed, i.e. whether the theory with the Boltzmann weight det 1/4 (D st) yields the right continuum limit. Since the problem is unsolved, pieces of evidence in favor and against are collected and examined.

A path-integral representation of the free one-flavour staggered-fermion determinant
A complete study of QCD on the lattice requires the numerical simulation of dynamical fermions. These Monte Carlo calculations are extremely computationally costly, since the effects of quarks must be included by first integrating out the fermion path integral, and then describing the resulting non-local dynamics of the fermion determinant. For a review of recent developments, see e.g. [1, 2]. ...
متن کاملTopological susceptibility in staggered fermion chiral perturbation theory
Abstract The topological susceptibility of the vacuum in quantum chromodynamics has been simulated numerically using the Asqtad improved staggered fermion formalism. At nonzero lattice spacing the residual fermion doublers (fermion “tastes”) in the staggered fermion formalism give contributions to the susceptibility that deviate from conventional continuum chiral perturbation theory. In this br...
متن کاملLocality with staggered fermions
We address the locality problem arising in simulations, which take the square root of the staggered fermion determinant as a Boltzmann weight to reduce the number of dynamical quark tastes. A definition of such a theory necessitates an underlying local fermion operator with the same determinant and the corresponding Green’s functions to establish causality and unitarity. We illustrate this poin...

First results from simulations of improved actions for both gauge fields and staggered fermion fields in three dimensional QCD are presented. This work provides insight into some issues of relevance to lattice theories in four dimensions. In particular, the renormalization of the bare lattice coupling is dramatically reduced when the treelevel O(a) improved action is used. Naik improvement of t...
متن کاملDynamical Simulations with Highly Improved Staggered Quarks
It is well established that lattice artifacts can be suppressed substantially by the use of SU(3)projected smeared links in the fermion action. An example is the Highly Improved Staggered Quark action where the ASQ-like effective links are constructed from reunitarized Fat7 links. A general procedure is presented for computing the derivative of the fermion action with respect to the base links ...
